Energy Strategy

Code for Sustainable Homes Credit Ene 1

CO2 has a direct environmental impact and is a major greenhouse gas, contributing to climate change. The credit scale relates to the operational energy requirements of the home under standard occupancy assumptions – rather than actual energy use. It should be noted that the actual energy consumption may be markedly different, as a range of user-specific  issues will affect it, such as the hours of operation of space heating, type and size of household, use of white goods, etc.

The assessment criteria for the Ene 1 is the percentage improvement of the dwelling emission rate (DER) over the target emission rate (TER). The calculation for TER is based on the methodology used within SAP2009 and Building Regulations AD L1A. The approach allows a weighted fuel factor for carbon emissions from different fuels and does not reflect the absolute carbon emission targets; it therefore enables some technologies based on a particular fuel to achieve a higher TER than others. This increase in the TER allows the technology to secure a large percentage improvement over the DER, but may result in increased emissions from the property compared with a standard gas primary heating system on which the DER is based in SAP2009.

How we help

Achieving higher levels of the Code for Sustainable Homes requires significant reductions in the energy performance of the building. For instance CSH level 4 requires a 25% reduction and CSH 5 requires 100% reduction. Achieving these reductions requires careful planning and often a combination of high levels of insulation and the provision of renewable energy technology are the most appropriate way of achieving the required energy performance.

Our energy strategy report considers a range of insulation options and examines the feasibility of installing renewable energy technology. It is designed to helps developers to make the right choice for their particular building. The report also forms the basis of an energy statement that may be required as part of the planning application process.
