LZC feasibility

The Code for Sustainable Homes has an issue under the energy category where potentially two credits can be achieved when Low or Zero Carbon Technologies are implemented. One credit is available where there is a 10% reduction in carbon emissions as a result of the provision of low or zero carbon technologies and two credits where there is a 15% redcution in carbon emissions.

There are however additional requirements to the evidence that is provided. Principally this means that the choise of the energy generating technology following a feasibility study that is prepared by an indepedent energy specialist.

There are a number of requirements the renewable energy feasibility study must meet. The Code for Sustainable Homes states the following about the renewable energy feasibility study:

A study carried out by an independent energy specialist to establish the most appropriate LZC energy source for a building or development.

The renewable energy feasibility study must cover as a minimum:

  • Energy generated from LZC energy source per year
  • Payback
  • Land use
  • Local planning requirements
  • Noise
  • Whole life cost and lifecycle impact of potential specification in terms of carbon emissions
  • Any available grants
  • All tehnologies appropriate to the site and energy demand of the development
  • Reasons for excluding other technologies

The Code then continues to recommend that such a renewable energy feasibility study should preferably undertaken during RIBA C.
